pink ice

Sometimes driving to work on two-lane Meridian Road I'm glad no cars are around me because I am mesmerized by Nature. -15 F (-26 C) temps put hoar frost on every twig this morning. With the rising sun pinking up the frosting and clouds, I thanked my lucky cars - I mean stars - to be living in a winter wonderland.

You can indeed thank your lucky stars, Ruth. Fantastical things are happening this winter all over the western world! :)

Absolutely gorgeous Ruth!..you captured the colors and the cold well. I am currently not working and have been thinking of all the sunrises I used to see but now miss..

A true winter wonderland. the rosy sky just adds to the magic.

Dang it! You outdid me on the snow sunrise photos....again! Seriously, that's as beautiful as the one I sent you yesterday. As I said over on Bear Swamp, I bow to the master. ((bow))

Oh, these pictures are gorgeous! How great that you can pull over; usually when I see something to photograph, in NJ or PA, I've got some tailgater on my rear! These pictures make me want to paint!

so incredibly beautiful. i know so many of you are getting way more snow than you bargained for, but I sure would like to see a little down here. I'm so thankful that I get to see the beauty through the talented photographers in the blogging world.

new to your blog - i'm sure I'll be back.

Snow in the city is not nearly this gorgeous for long.

Hi Ruth, what a fun experiment. Have you warmed up yet? All of the photos are beautiful but the photo of the tree and sky looks 3d just beautiful. Can't wait to see the birdie pics.

shicat said...

It's sooo cold. I was hoping for 25 below(wind chill) so that schools would have a cold day? I will have to wait and see.( fingers crossed reports have it as only being 20 below:()

Beautiful and freezing!
I stood staring at the bank's glass doors on Michigan Ave. yesterday. They were frosted soild with the most beautiful ice crystal pattern. Wish I had my camera with me!

Gwen Buchanan said...

Wow! Art by Nature... and Ruth...

This must have been amazing in the flesh... spellbinding... it's just magical!!!

That is so cold.. Are those temps unusual for down there?

Oh my Ruth. What beauty you see on the way to work!
Just amazing for me to imagine seeing such a sight.
I hope you always go out with extra clothes and snacks.
I suspect that you could expire in that kind of environment without the proper gear.
Not to be pessimistic, just realistic. Peace

Well, what to add but just thats it's really beautiful? Did we (or will we) also see your "portrait photo" in winter clothes?

Once more, I appreciate your C indications! I'm still making my "campaign" against the F!! :-)

Ruth said...

Boots, hehe, I think you're teasing me, dear sister. Them stars can be quite fantastic and fascinating. :D

Ruth said...

Oliag, life changes, and now you get to watch the sunrise from home, or not (if you're asleep). That's nice!

Good luck catching the flying squirrel, you and smart Miss Sally. Scritch, sratch, they are so smart!

Ruth said...

Kerri, I will stay warm this weekend, probably watch some basketball. Maybe you too. Any UVA games (if that's who you follow)?

Ruth said...

Thank you, Sue. I confess I expected the scene to get washed out in the camera. The light was just right.

Ruth said...

Ah, Susan! Shucks. Thank you, but I don't think this one is nearly like the one you sent me. That sun! And yours are beautiful too. So much snow!! Thankfully this cold is good for beauty! And maybe best through windows. :)

Ruth said...

Laura! Meridian Road is a county road, so it's not heavily trafficked. As soon as someone is on my tail, they pass!

I hope you'll paint paint paint. Yay for inspiration! You've really been going after it over there!

Ruth said...

Moi, you, me and Midwestern scenery! I am love-love-loving your Route 66 series. Still jealous though.

Beautiful blog. Congratulations for being nominated to the blogs of note hall of fame:) I can understand way.

Ruth said...

Hi, Spread your Wings, welcome to my blog. It's sweet what you and your daughter share over at yours. Thank you for coming by!

Ruth said...

Sanna, you're right! By the time I got to town on this drive, there was no frost.

Ruth said...

Cathy, did you get a snow day? Don did today (Friday) so with MLK Day Monday, a four day weekend.

It took me a few days to warm up from that outing Sunday. I was dumb staying out longer than I should. Thankfully I didn't get sick, just a wee sore throat. Stay warm yourself!

Ruth said...

Anet, I imagine that was gorgeous! Too bad you couldn't catch it on sensor. The beauty of nature is harsh, I think of the poor men outside the Rescue Mission just down the street from your bank. I'm sure they don't keep them waiting outside in this cold.

Megan said...

I found your blog through Blogger's Blogs of Note, and I just have to say that these photos are gorgeous! Thanks so much for sharing them with us.

Ruth,
I know they hang out at the downtown library and the main bus station during the day.
Noah and I see them sleeping in the quiet back corners of the library, snoring away. At least they are warm and have a use of a bathroom.

Congrats on the blog of Note, you deserve it!

Very gorgeous photos, Ruth. I'm a big fan of your work.

Well of course congrats are in order, as it's not every day one of these zillions of blogs becomes a blog of note! And on a Friday too, which means lots of drinking and merriment for sure. I needed a good excuse to celebrate. Your blogs certainly are noteworthy, and I love the Paris one, don't ever delete it, or I'll be so sad.
Your photos are superb, I've saved two of them to keep forever, as they are like paintings by artists, and you Ruth are no doubt an artist. Blessings. Don't let all this fame go to your head.

Your art is amazing! I did not mess up, I know these are photos but art is all I can see!

sixstars said...

Thats a real winter. I thought - 6c was cold. Great sunrise photo.

Ruth said...

Dear Gwen, I only snapped the picture, it was begging to be taken. I turned into the first road, turned around, and went back to get this view. I just shot it in auto, Gwen. Nature did it.

I'd say we get about one week a year with below 0 F temps, but it seems as if we've had more severe wintry weather this year. I think you get more moderate on the Bay.

Ruth said...

Hi Carl, you, and also rauf has suggested taking extra warm clothes and snacks, and I am not always good about that. Thank you for your concern.

I worry about the little kids waiting for the bus outside. Today, most local schools were closed thankfully. When the windchill is -25F, they close 'em!

Ruth said...

Daniel, before you I didn't know Mesmer was a person!! That is really mesmerizing.

Ruth said...

Oh Leena, you have winter and grandma wonderland. Big hugs and kisses to our sweet Melli.

Ruth said...

Sophie, I hope you experience winter sometime, maybe you already have.

Ruth said...

Well, Jiva, if you move to Wyoming, you will see it, I think! You in that cute little chalet.

Ruth said...

Hen, ah, that's good. Nature brings me incredible joy, even when it's at its harshest.

Ruth said...

Peter, keep working on convering us to metric. I will thank you forever.

See me in my winter getup? Hmm, we'll see, we'll see. Maybe if you come to visit, we can take a portrait duo, how's that?

Ruth said...

Every Photo, wow, you are the first to comment about the blog of note, thank you! I'm a little overwhelmed.

Your blog images are inspiring. Thank you for taking time to comment.

Megan, thank you for taking time to stop by. Please stay warm over there in MN, even colder than here.

Wow, Gwen, what a surprise! I'm numbly moving along. Thank you.

Thank you, Willow, if I recall, you were a recent blogger of note yourself. Thank you, your blog is inspiring.

Ruth said...

Sanna, ah shucks, it twarn't nothin. Exciting actually!

And by the way, I got a certain package in the mail today! I have to write you properly . . .

Montag said...

I was astonished to see your "The Clouds are my Mountains".
I suppose it is a Michigan thing.
I remember driving toward Port Huron and seeing the immense banks of clouds ahead that hung over Lambton County, Ontario, moving south off Lake Huron.

I often thought them the Himalayas of "The Far Pavilions" and "The Jewel in the Crown", and fancied I was traveling to the foothills of the pillars of heaven.

It is a Southern Michigan thing.

Ruth said...

Well, Just Jules, you have it worse in MN, and it's hard to imagine.

Thank you for your greeting very much.

Anet, my friend Heather worked at the Wayne State Library, and she had lots of stories. One of a whiskey bottle breaking on the floor right in front of the reference desk!

Ruth said...

Hi, Philip, oh thank you, wow.

I like this challenge actually, and it raises lots of interesting thoughts about photography. I've actually given it more anxiety than I should have. But I will consider what you ask.

Ruth said...

Thank you so much, Joseph.

Ruth said...

Jiva, you're wonderful, wow what you do for my ego. Please feel free to print out any photos that you like.

Just for you I won't delete Paris Deconstructed. Actually, now going there is one of the only ways I have to visit it now, so I'll keep it for me too.

Hello Ruth,
I recently made a short video of me enjoying the 9° weather we are having in Chicago. I'm from Vermont and couldn't for the life of me imagine what a year would feel like without winter. I know Michigan winters can be vicious, but I, like you, think there is so much beauty in them. cheers and thanks.

Edward, I've heard about and seen photos of the red rocks in Sedona. My friend built a house looking at them, and I've wanted to go visit. Such gorgeous landscapes all around us.

I agree with you about blogs, I like the interactivity with people around the country and the world. What a treat.
