The New Deal's new gig

Our son Peter is in a band called Meridian, which I posted about in April. He is also in another band called 'The New Deal,' which plays gigs around the state doing great covers of Bill Withers, Rolling Stones, Motown, Clapton - and others from a wide spectrum of styles. Don and I went to hear them at The Exchange in Lansing for the first time last Saturday. Unfortunately, Mike the vocalist/sax player/keyboardist was away. He's a talented musician - played his sax at the Grammys as a high schooler! It was the first time we heard The New Deal because they start playing at 10, and that's past my bed time. But we went, and I stayed awake! Now I regret not having gone to hear them more often. They are all very talented, and I like how Linsay, Mike and Jeff contribute vocals in turn.

The New Deal: Jeff, Linsay, Mark, Miquel and Peter (Mike was absent) - shot from the balcony at The Exchange (Mark and Peter are both in the band Meridian also.)

Mike got them a gig on a Princess cruise this fall, first leaving NYC up to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Then down to the Caribbean. If, like Don and me, you can't take a cruise this fall and hear them in person, give a listen to the nice 6:42 minute promo video, below, from their myspace site.

I left a little huff today at huffing . . .

Thanks for sharing your son's great video, Ruth.
Sax and men in suits and ties - great combo!

Balance, balance - the dance-cruise-ship-fun stuff is lucrative, and I hope it's not so much fun that Peter gives up Meridian. It's a problem with everyone, when the ultra-avant-jazz Sun City Girls was around, they used to play Filippino and Indonesian pop music on cruise ships around Bali in the winter months. Carol used to work on a cruise ship where all the "serious" Bay Area classical musicians would play goofy summer gigs on tours of the Alaska Inland Passage. They used to joke, "Why not quit our day jobs? This stuff pays better!"

Very entertaining and Linsay is adorable! Sounds like an adventure. Hopefully they will enjoy it and all of the sights along the way too.

Best of luck to all of you in The New Deal! I know the travelers will love you being there.

Ohhhh. That's our Peter-Boy! Look how much fun he's having! Thanks for sharing this, Ruth!

Sanna, I'm glad you liked it. I only saw this video recently, and I had to laugh at their synchronized guitar playing and sax playing - reminded me of that scene in 'Star Wars' in the night club. They do look like they're having fun.

Loring, well that is quite interesting, to know other bands do this too as a side thing. You can save quite a bit since expenses are at a minimum.

I don't know about Meridian. I'm going through withdrawal already, thinking they might not continue after this. But you never know what will happen.

Sharon! I know! I couldn't stop staring at her, she's so beautiful and has that great husky voice. I was taken with the band's camaraderie both at The Exchange and on the video. It's genuine, they have a blast. I think they'll be a hit too.

Boots, I did a double take when I saw the video, because I never saw Peter play guitar and dance at the same time. :)

I don't mean to sound like Meridian is over - just their gig at Harper's maybe, not sure. With the album, and maybe some interest from a manager, there may be things brewing . . .

The video kinda reminded me of the Chevy Chase/Paul Simon video!

The boy is heading out into the big, wide world...

Gasp! Tell Peter to say "on hiatus," it doesn't sound quite as final. And Sharon's right, Linsay will be a world-class chanteuse.

Anet said...

Wow!!!! They are awesome. That Peter is one cool cat with those cool moves!
I want to be hot like Linsay!!!!
dang!

not out of bias Ruth, peter is my fav. very lively. they have a good drummer too. Lindsay sings effortlessly, she sings the winehouse number with such ease. there will be lot of demand for winehouse numbers on the cruise. please tell peter about Cilmi. There'll be snobs on the cruise.
What do the snobs like ? opera ? Sarah Brightman numbers would be fine on a cruise i think.
they'll have a wonderful time Ruth, please don't worry.

rauf said...

oh yes, Ruth, please tell them to practice older numbers. You won't find any college students on the cruise.

OOohhh, I love that song and they did a great rendition! I love her voice. Very cool! :)

They're a great band!

:), nice music on the you tube link! Good luck to all of them, and I cannot help but smile at Rauf's comments, he is so wise.

Don, you're right! That video is hilarious, and I get that same sense of fun, humor, and energy from The New Deal. Can't we get away for a week??

Ruth said...

Yes yes, Loring, Meridian is on hiatus.

I can picture Linsay and the band charming the ship so that no one will want to go to the other 'venues.' 'Let's go see that cute, young band again,' they'll say, 'they make us feel good.'

Ruth said...

Anet! Peter and Miguel in sync, and Mike and Jeff in synch cracked me up. And yeah, yeah, I know, me too, I wanna be hot like her too. To be able to sing like her, dance like her, look like her, wow!

Ruth said...

oh rauf, you are so far ahead of me, I didn't even know that was a Winehouse number, oh I'm pitiful. After reading your comment, I asked Peter, 'which one is Amy Winehouse's song'? Rehab he said. You, Loring, Sharon and Peter have to keep educating me.

Your ideas are so good about music to please the older crowd. They have some in their reportoire, you probably heard in the video, since they do weddings. Brightman is a great idea! I'm sure they will want to work on some new numbers on the ship. I am so impressed already with the wide range of songs they perform.

Oh, and rauf, did you know on this ship you can watch a movie on deck under the stars? I can't wait to hear all the stories from Peter.

Ruth said...

Drowsey, did you mean Rehab? I am an idjut, didn't know that song. I know, Linsay's voice is perfect, she'll win them over, she and those cute men.

Ruth said...

Hi Babs! Thanks for coming over from Drowsey's. You have the MOST amazingly cool-looking blog ever. Glad you like the band! Want to hire them? I'm sure they'd be glad to cross the pond!

Ruth said...

Mystic :). Thank you for the good wishes for Peter and the band, he appreciates it. He was busy packing last night and we're driving him to the airport here in a little bit. rauf did have some excellent ideas for the bands repertoire. (Is that how you spell it?)

MERIDIAN is not over! Thanks for the compliments everyone! (From airport terminal)

The Cruise folks are going to be rocking and rolling!!!

Loring Wirbel said...

Yay!

Ruth said...

Peter, I say 'Yay!' too along with Loring!

Ruth said...

Gwen, I agree. I think the band too will feed off the energy from people and build on their talent, repertoire and energy. Imagine their versatility by the end of the 3 months!

Bob Johnson said...

Hey Ruth cool video, lol about the sync, I'm sure it will do well with the target market, great voices, Lindsay reminds me of one of the girls from the B-52's, they should do well.

Loring Wirbel said...

Hey, Bob, did you know Kate Pierson of B52's is now 60 years old??!! And she's still hot.

sandy said...

I am going to listen to them tonight when I have the time....

How wonderful you get to be up close and personal with one of the band members and enjoy your son's talents.

Ahhh, great gig, on a cruise ship...

so cool.

Auntie Sandy, I know! I never ever wanted to go on a cruise. But now my imagination is with Peter every day, and I think I would enjoy it - on his ship anyway!
