Feverish city
poor, sick daughter with a fever
We knew it would be hot. We didn't know it would be hot enough to hit record highs in New York City: 41 celsius/105 Fahrenheit the morning we arrived, Wednesday. With the heat index it felt as high as 119 in some parts of the City.
Lesley was feeling sick that day, her first day off since moving to NYC in June (she works at a coffee shop in addition to her design internship). Maybe slowing down let the bug catch up? We took her to the doctor Friday, and she had strep. :( When we left this morning she was already recovering with the help of the Z antibiotic she got.
As sorry as we were to see her sick, we didn't mind not venturing out into the City on such blasted days as Wednesday and Thursday were. We just went far enough to buy food, the concrete radiating heat up into our faces as we snuck out to the vegetable and meat markets. (I found out you don't pay the man who cuts the meat. He gives you a slip, and while he cuts, you take the slip to the man behind the window and pay him, he stamps the slip, and you go back to the cutting man with your stamped slip to get your cut-up chicken.)
With a little TheraFlu in her, we enjoyed sitting in Lesley's cool air conditioned apartment catching up on each others' lives, watching movies ("Munich", "Something New," and "Delicatessen"), and cooking and eating.
We loved seeing the Astoria, Queens neighborhood where Lesley and her roommate Julie live. Above is a lady in Lesley's building making sure the cannas, begonias and hydrangeas wouldn't suffer.
Here's a view of the apartment building across the street from Lesley. Silly me, I didn't take a pic of Lesley's building, which is just as pretty! Friday night we sat on Lesley's balcony -- it was finally cool enough -- and watched the world go by.

So sorry to hear that Lesley was sick. I am glad hear she is making progress on recovery. Since I am seeing a new post and comments on In Soul, I am guessing you and Don had a safe return to the farm. Welcome Home! See you next weekend!!!
And thanks, Ruth, for giving us a taste of Lesley's world. So glad Mommy and Daddy could be there for the sick little girl. I'm quite sure she ate that up. Finally, the skies have opened up here the last couple days to give us some much-needed rain. Maybe everyone will have a break this weekend?
Donica, thank you. I talked with Lesley last night on the phone, and she was feeling quite good after sleeping most of the day! Yes, Don and I are back at the farm, and the pleasant temps make it feel like heaven.
Ginnie, we were glad to be there when she got sick. Because she hasn't found a doctor yet, we took her to emergency Friday morning at the nearest hospital. The urgent care clinics were maxed out from heat stress patients! So glad you got rain.
I'm hoping for good weather here this weekend!
Oh wow,
I feel for your daughter.
How perfectly horrible to be in a fever in that kind of heat.
Thank goodness you were there to help out.
Although she was sick, how nice you opted to stay in and enjoy eachother's company. On our trip to Michigan, although we did see and do a lot, some of my favorite memories are of being cooped up in the car together- sharing stories, playing spelling and math games, and giving hugs:) We also listened to Animal Farm and the Empire Strikes Back for Radio. It shocked me to see you are already back in Michigan- time flies when you're having fun!
This reminds me of the summer in Pasadena (without you), after a year of college, and Mom drove out with me. Half-way there I came down with the worse case of strep I've ever had to this day. A visit to the hospital nearby (which one would it be....can't remember!), antibiotics, and a couch at Chris and LeAnn's with a few days rest cured me. I was so glad my mom was there, eventhough an adult!
There is no substitute for Mom when you're sick. I'm glad Lesley had you both there!
Wish we could be with you this weekend. I hope you know how much!
Luvs...
Healing Room, yes, it's good we were there for her first illness. Strangely enough, before we knew she was getting sick, I made her chicken noodle soup. Some kind of intuition I guess.
Rachel, we had some of the best conversations we've ever had! I hope your time in MI was wonderful; I hate that we missed you. :( Cool idea to listen to books in the car together. We'll miss you so much this weekend. I'm back at work today after 3 weeks away.
Mrs. M., wow, I don't remember hearing about that illness. It's awful being sick away from home, but it's not as bad when Mom's with you. I wish you and your family could be here this weekend. :(
aww, steenks! hey, those final scenes in Munich, they take place in *our* (old) neighborhood in Brooklyn! nancy walked through the set every day for a week on the way to the subway and back.
Cool, Nate- although I haven't seen the flick, is it worth seeing?
How fun, Nathan!
Rachel, it's a very well made movie, good acting, etc. I can talk with you about it when/if you see it. :)
Hope Lesley is feeling fine now Ruth. We are used to dealing with heat a couple of degrees more doesn't really matter. Children are coping with it. Older generation find it tough going
Thank you, Rauf. Lesley is better and went to work this week. And she's flying to Michigan today for a visit! I'm so happy.
Yes older people can't handle the heat, their hearts are weak, and pumping blood to the skin for cooling puts the heart to work more than they can handle.
