Ok, no award, just share your blog name's story December 1st

-
That was a fun little rip and rant, phew! Thank you to those who agreed to participate in my How I Named My Blog invitation.

After a couple days of sobriety, and some chillier November air, I've decided to keep on despising and shunning awards of any kind! If you'd like to tell the story of how you chose your blog name on December 1st, please do! But there will be NO MAJOR AWARD! You can leave a comment in this or the previous post if you'd like to participate, and I'll add you blog to the list. If you already told me you would, I've got you on my list for that day's post. If you want to withdraw now that the pulchritudinous award is just a pretty face on my last post, let me know, teehee.

(It is very hard to resist an exclamation point now, let me tell you. There, I left a big period. That feels a little better.)

I don't like "winners" and "losers" (I was rarely chosen to be on anyone's team) - but I am curious about some of those blog names out there. You can use me as an excuse: "Ruth asked, so I'm telling . . ."

I mean even a name like "Peter's Paris" - how did Swedish Peter come to live in Paris?

What! No award? Well, I guess it's hard to choose but just use your intuition. Or throw a dice. Don't waste a perfectly good award!

I kind of like no award, I think you'll get more participants.

Count me in on December 1st.

What a splendid idea. If I remember to post on 1 December, count me in:)

I'd like to play, too. My blog's name is "On the Edge of the Chair of Literature." If you'd like, I'll explain why on December 1st.

No award is a good thing .... Everybody wins!!

What is the deal with the dude directly above me? Spam much?

No exclamation points?!!!!!!!!!!! But I do like the extra large and bold period, though. BTW, I like the sleep-deprived Ruthie almost as much as I like the real Ruthie! :)))

Dear Ruth, I suddenly wish I had a more cryptic blog name :) but it is dear to me all the same.
It will be fun to read the origins of titles at the start of December... and you will be explaining yours too n'est-ce pas?

Fantastic idea Ruth, sorry life is just too busy to run after now, lol. Anna :)

Annie, all that hoopla for nothing!!!!

Ruth said...

Yay, Barry, it will be an explorer's adventure!

Ruth said...

Cute, Cupcakes! Thanks for sharing your story. Yours is unique.

Ruth said...

Pamela, in a way it is, but you could explain it as Edward, and that would be interesting.

Ruth said...

Hooray again, PurestGreen!

Ruth said...

Great, Gayle, I'm glad you're joining in! Thank you.

Ruth said...

CottageGirl, exactly, my friend.

Ruth said...

Susie, yes, but you had the distance of cyber space to curb my enthusiasm. :)

Ruth said...

Renee, I hope that's a good thing!

Ruth said...

Yay, and thanks, Jean!

Ruth said...

Yes, sweet Shaista, I'll be sharing mine - and it isn't all that thrilling. Maybe that's why I eliminated the blog award? :)

Ruth said...

That's ok, Anna, thank you for the thought. :)

Blog awards are becoming trite! I applaud you for giving them up. I will share the naming story on my blog.

Ruth said...

I'm glad, Kenju!

That blog award you posted recently was funny. :)

You are as daft as a brush! (don't know where that saying came from) I rather liked all those exclamations too ;) I'll still take part, even though I'm mortified at there being no award! ;)

♥ Braja said...

Sounds like fun....

I'd like a cuddle with Bishop more, though....:)))

Ruth said...

Oh Babs, I know, on both counts (being daft, and no award)!

Ruth said...

You are welcome to do so, ♥ Braja. xoxo

Hello Ruth, and thank you for your kind words over at mine earlier on. You are a true darling, that much is clear.

Look - I feel totally panic-struck at committing to explaining the naming of my blog in this fashion (sorry but it's the way I'm made), but count me in. Forgive me though, if I chicken out, in the end.

I'll try not to, obviously.

Anna MR said...

PS I really like the BWO thing. Amongst many other things I see here.

Ruth said...

Anna, I feel like calling you "Little Anna, and I have no idea why. Maybe it's because I want to reassure you that I don't want you panic-struck. But then I read at your place that you have already written for the grand unveiling!! Thank you! I have added future of my past to the bloglist of revealers December 1st!

So glad I found you at Montag's.

Oh, my, yes, of course I'll be there. I happen to be quite sentimentally attached to my blog name and will relish the chance to tell the story on December 1.

I'm tickled to death to see you also highlighting something that's more insidious than the proliferation of "awards". I've been fighting the encroachment of exclamation marks, smilies and lols in my own writing and commenting. The impulse to show a little emotion's good, of course. But words can carry emotion, too.

I'm just looking at Wendell Berry's "The Peace of Wild Things". Not an exclamation point in sight. Likewise, a batch of Ephron's essays I read last night didn't carry a single acronym.
And so on....

Best of all, I found "pulchritudinous" here today. (Oops. I almost gave in to an exclamation point! Arrrrgggghhhh)

shoreacres said...

I keep forgetting to tell you - every time I come here my heart melts at the new photo of Bishop.
It's partly the photo itself and partly that I know something of that kind of relationship.

Ruth said...

Fantastic, Linda, an honor! (couldn't resist).

Re: those exclamation marks, I found in writing the previous post, and then moving into this one, that it was all in what I had gotten used to. If I really let the words just speak, they feel weighty to me. Then I ask myself, but does the reader/recipient get that sense??????

My mother used to quote someone - wish I could remember - who, after someone had said how wonderful marvelous and fantastic something was: "Pray, what word have you saved for the Almighty?"

Yes, Berry's poem. He is the ultimate avoider of cultural extravagances. Doesn't even own a computer!

It makes me happy that Bishop makes your heart melt. She is only 100 times better in person. And that's no exaggeration.

Anna MR said...

Ruth, you are most welcome to call me "Little Anna". Nobody else calls me that, and I've never actually spared any thought to being called that either, but now that you mention it, it feels like a nice thing to have a place in the world where one is known as "little" something.

So hurrah all round.

My entry for your thing is *very* short, Ruth. I hope it isn't cheating.

V. glad to have met you too - and no, I don't feel shy of you. I tend to feel quite shy about saying something somewhere for the first time, though, as I am easily carried away into loquacious verbosity, and unless I feel safe, this tendency embarrasses me.

So now I've maybe proven that I feel safe here. That'll be another hurrah.

You take care, Ruthie girl.

x

Ruth said...

Anna, very short is good. Aren't you glad when you find a short blog post? Unfortunately for my visitors, that is rarely the case here.

Yippee - celebrating that you don't feel shy here now. The ice lantern has been broken.

Trudi said...

Hi Ruth. This sounds like loads of fun. If I can still find the nerve on December 1st, I'd like to join.
You have a great blog and I enjoy visiting.

Ruth said...

Trudi - you're so good to participate! People are naturally curious about these things, especially with a blog name like Going Out on a Limb. It might seem trivial or mundane to you, because it is in your head, but we have no idea why this blog was going out on a limb for you, or what about your life is going out on a limb, etc. There is an innate human interest in it. Even if it is simply writing in public for the first time. We can all relate to that.

It is extremely interesting for me to read this blog. Thanks for it. I like such themes and anything that is connected to this matter. I would like to read a bit more on this blog soon.
