simple sudden October

Impulsively, I have to show you the morning, driving out of the farm and across the county on that old meridian road. It stops me sometimes.

Verlyn Klinkenborg wrote yesterday -

A day isn’t just a standard measure,
all the same size so each fits on a calendar page.
A day is a period of light, an astronomical event.

Your last picture is breathtaking. I want to spend a week right there and feel the morning fog on the meadow and hear the owls at dusk and watch all of the stars in the clear autumn night sky.
Ahhhhh....

Oh, God, that is beautiful! You are so lucky to wake to that. Happy, happy weekend.

Beautiful pictures. And I love the quote. Another way of thinking that lifts you out of the mundane and up off the planet for a moment.

Wow, love the snaps.

There is a warm glow to the October sun in the early morning and evening. What a beautiful drive you have to work.

Ohhhh, that pumpkin on the fence with the sunrise behind....perfection! Love that last one, too. It looks like a double exposure near the top.

feel like singing Eddie Brickell's 'Picture Perfect morning'
Its beautiful. The song and the pictures here.

Reminds me of one particular Elton John's video of 80's i think
Ideal place for Peter to shoot his song video.

Its all in the head Ruth.
Things start to get pleasant September onwards. The month flies and we are in October. But the days i am not happy seem longer though the days are shorter. Winter seems to stay longer for you. Summer months fly for you but for us, they seem to last for ever. Thankfully summer is gone for us and sadly gone for you too.

I'm there.

Coming from a person who lives in a huge city, it's so amazing to me that this is the kind of scenery that you see every day. I always enjoy your photos and am totally envious! Thanks for sharing your corner of the world! :)

my husband always says the early morning/late evening light is best. you are proving that point. these are magnificent.

It was 75 degrees on Wednesday, and nature decided the temperature didn't match the aspen yellow. So on Oct. 1, the high was 48, and there was frost on the pumpkins. But it's back to 70 on Saturday. Love the fall in the mountains.

What beautiful landscape – I love the Fall. You have caught beautiful morning lights and a great harmony of colours.

We haven't seen the sun for a week, nor is it predicted that it will be making a guest appearance for at least the week to come.

So it is almost a religious experience to, at least, see on your post a picture of what we've been missing.

I'd almost forgotten what lies hidden behind those thick gray clouds and cold drizzle.

Greetings from energetic Melli, I have been there with her, that her mom can get some rest :) It has been a great joy for me.

Happy weekend to you, Ruth!

Hi neighbor...Your photographs are stunning. Not just these. All of your photos tell a story. I didn't get to comment on your pride and joy but it is priceless.

The first photo just took my breath away Ruth! Then to go from that to your misty landscape...amazing...your photography is stunning...

...and I want to thank you for the quote which lead me to Klinkenborg's editorial...I always seem to find such treats when I visit here:)...I'm trying to catch up on all your posts this weekend...I have been away too long:)

What a wonderful set of photographs so atmospheric and emotionally evocative. Took me right back to my childhood looking out over the Yorkshire moors on an Autumn evening.

Wonderful pictures and a real October feeling! You seem to be much more in October than we are here! It's still surprisingly warm, some kind of Indian summer!

shoreacres said...

For one who loves autumn so, it is almost physically painful to see such early October beauty. We've been smothered with yet another warm front from the Gulf and are facing heat and humidity galore.

If I could have one wish granted tomorrow it would be to walk in such gorgeous countryside and feel the season's change. What a blessing for you.

And curiosity here - the meridian road. Is there a connection there with Peter's group? Surely there must be... Is the road truly named Meridian, or did you bestow the name?

Brilliant photography ! P.S. The pimped in the photo of the boys on the sand heaps refers to : all the colors and the brightness is exaggerated, enhanced.

Ruth said...

CottageGirl, I would give a lot to hear the owls at dusk. I have not heard them in a couple of years. I still have never seen an owl in the flesh, er feather.

Ruth said...

I agree, Kanmuri, I just had to show you.

Ruth said...

Hi, Jean of the meadow. So you couldn't go to the UP without your friends? So sad. Or go to Italy with them? So sad. But you know they might get a taste for it.

Hey, did you hear about the opening of "Escanaba" last weekend, third part of a trilogy by Jeff Daniels at the Purple Rose Theater right here in Chelsea? "Escanaba in da Moonlight" then "Escanaba in Love", now just "Escanaba." My Yooper friend is not at all pleased with these stories. :|

Ruth said...

DS, I count myself fortunate every day, for many reasons, and being a visual person, this place is a daily gift.

Ruth said...

Oh hello, Eliane, and welcome. Don admires you and your blog, and now you're moving to our part of the world, sort of. It becomes a small planet when you lift off.

Ruth said...

Such a glow, Pamela.

Ruth said...

Thank you, Jill.

Ruth said...

Violetski, in six years I haven't tired of the drive. I've never been able to watch the seasons change before like this, in my little car between fields.

Ruth said...

Susie, thank you. I'm not used to seeing layers of hills, be they ever-so-slight, in our Michigan terrain. So that last scene was a real treat.

Ruth said...

Oh rauf, she is sweet! Once again, all the way from Chennai, you introduce me to an American singer-songwriter, it's pitiful really. This was her debut album, about a year ago? How did you hear about her, rauf?

Oh I am not sad that summer is gone. I look forward to every season. While I am in autumn I am looking forward to snow, candles, wood burning in the stove, soup.

I am afraid I would wilt and wither in the Chennai heat. I don't know how you manage. I wish you cool days ahead in December and January.

Ruth said...

Kat, bring the Mexican Layered Dip please.

Ruth said...

Thank you, sweet Renee.

Ruth said...

Thank you, sweet Renee.

Ruth said...

Hi, Rachael, it gives me pleasure knowing you come here and get a feel for our rural life. We are fortunate. Sometimes I would like to live in a city. I don't know much about Houston.

Ruth said...

California Girl, it's all about the light for a photographer like your husband. I have been telling my husband about your husband's photos, just showed him the first one on your current post, Oct. 5 - just brilliant.

I like that quote because I think there is a little farm in everyone.

Ruth said...

Loring, I can't tell if you're being facetious because you don't like the changes up and down. But I imagine the fall in the Rockies is spectacular. Don just showed me a fall float canoe trip from Delta Mills Park to Fitgerald Park - in mid-November! Now I won't be making that little trip. Yikes, could be freezing out there.

Ruth said...

Ellen, cool, isn't it?

Ruth said...

Vagabonde, I think there must be some innate love of reds, oranges, yellows and greens in humans, because there is an almost universal love of autumn.

Ruth said...

Barry, your getaway with Linda was rainy, but you found profound light and soul healing. I was really touched by your posts and just how you connected with that place. It's all there, all the time, if we just stop and notice it.

Ruth said...

Hi, Anet, you make the most of October, my Halloweeny friend.

Ruth said...

Ah, Sidney, such different scenes we see every day, you and I!

Ruth said...

Cathy, driving to work is a meditation. Seriously.

Ruth said...

Babs, thank you. Ok, I can hardly see because I'm still laughing at your post about poor Mo "resting" on the stairs.

Ruth said...

Hello, Leena! Oh you must be staying with family awhile. I think Melli-belli's mom must be expecting a sibling for sweet little Melli. You have such a happy family. Enjoy your break, my friend.

Ruth said...

Oh that's so nice, thank you, Gemma.

Your pink mariposa post today put me into a wonderful wonderful state of mind. I'm floating.

Ruth said...

Oh welcome, dear Oliag. A friend shared that Klinkenborg meditation with me, and I had to pass it on. You know, it is just so splendid sharing these things with you and my other friends, back and forth.

Ruth said...

Dakota Bear, rising above into connected consciousness. Life is astonishing.

Ruth said...

Oh Gwei Mui. What is it about this light that feels nostalgic? Maybe it's how it falls on the brown fields, feeling timeless. I know it touched me and I had to share it.

I am still sitting here stunned by your story at silken robes. This will stay with me today and many days.

Ruth said...

Thanks, Pat. The mornings have been grand, especially with dramatic clouds.

Ruth said...

It was a lovely morning, Bella.

Ruth said...

Peter, you needed that warmth for Nuit Blanche, so beautiful!

Ruth said...

Hiya, Linda. I wish you could walk here in the cool too.

This is literally Meridian Road, and yes you are so very attentive, the band Meridian was named partly for this road and area, which has a lot of things named Meridian. I think I finally found which degree it is, but for the life of me now I can't remember it.

Ruth said...

I think everyone loves a farm, Renaye, at least for a little while.

Ruth said...

Anya, our leaves are wet. When they are dry, it's fun to rake them into a pile and jump in. Well I haven't done that in a while. I need grandkids I think.

Ruth said...

Bindu, I could sit out there for a few hours, couldn't you?

Ruth said...

Merci, Daniel. Il est un de vos ressources historiques célèbres.

Ruth said...

Thank you, Hildegarde, and thank you for the explanation. :D

Ruth said...

Hi and welcome, John. Nice to see a fellow farmer (except I'm not the farmer, my husband is).

Jeanie said...

I don't know quite where you are, but I know this road and area well, and your photos capture it in a way that simply transports me there. Your work is astounding. I just love to wrap myself in it.

Renee said...

What a beautiful ride.

Ruth said...

Jeanie, oh thank you. You just don't know how much I love my drive to work! Well, it sounds like you understand.

Ruth said...

Renee, I love it. Lots of xoxo to you too.
