"a carpet, rich and rare"

Today is Sunday. Looking out the window I saw gold leaves that needed to be photographed. I went out into the November Michigan air, which was dark, chilly, damp and about to snow.

I heard my pal Bishop meow.

In spring 2004, when she was a kitten, I had to close her up in the garage while I planted seedlings, because she wanted to cuddle with me and the plants. She'd paw those tender little seedlings like they were the most fun toys ever. Especially herbs, which no doubt had some relation to catnip. She wanted to tear them apart in an orgiastic frenzy. I'd get so aggravated that I'd grab her, put her in the garage and not so gently close the door.

She can cuddle with leaves all she wants, that's fine with me.

"Isn't this a pretty leaf on my paw, Ma?" (below - Thank you to Mary for template help, and how to make photos bigger here. Yippee!)

Today it wasn't too long before Bishop and I were lying on the damp ground together, and she was nuzzled up inside my coat. We had a good, long relaxing November pause in the leafy grass. We almost fell asleep.

An hour later it was snowing. Which brings to mind this poem:

Leaves

How silently they tumble down
And come to rest upon the ground
To lay a carpet, rich and rare,
Beneath the trees without a care,
Content to sleep, their work well done,
Colors gleaming in the sun.

At other times, they wildly fly
Until they nearly reach the sky.
Twisting, turning through the air
Till all the trees stand stark and bare.
Exhausted, drop to earth below
To wait, like children, for the snow.

Here I go again....Beautiful!

That was a really lovely post, and such a cute cat! How could you lose your cool with her (she says clearing her throat) ;O)

This blog of yours is also fantastic.
Your leaves photos are just great, but those photos of Bishop are spectacular. I literally enjoyed looking at them. Bishop is adorable, indeed.

"a November pause" - sounds perfect.
(sometimes, it's just so good to be alive).

As usual, Ruth, exquisite photos! Bishop looks a lot like my cat Tobey. I love the poem. I hadn't seen that one before, nor heard of the author. Thank you for a bright spot on a dreary Sunday afternoon!

Glad Bishop (and you) got to play outside in the leaves before the snow came. She looks particularly enraptured by it all!

A nice moment in your lovely universe,Ruth.

What beautiful imagery!

It's been such a great autumn. Send Bishop my apologies, I always thought of her as a boy.

Me too, those gender-neutral names. The fact that you could get that photo just as she was displaying the leaf on her paw shows your excellent sense of timing.

Awe... Bishop is so cute! I love her eyes.
Yes, today was a sure reminder that Michigan winter is peeking around the corner at us. Ready or not, here it comes!
Oh, it's snowing right now:)

Ruth said...

Babs, I am ashamed, for she meant no harm. But she's a lunatic sometimes!

Ruth said...

Hello there, MedaM! I'm happy to see you, welcome to Bishop's farm.

Ruth said...

Hi Letitia. When we get through the pain, the beauty is better than before, no?

Ruth said...

Hi Susan, thank you! Is Tobey an American Wirehair too? I haven't seen another poem by Elsie Brady. Sweet isn't it? A good one for children to learn.

Ruth said...

Oh Sanna, if you could see Bishop's contortions live, you would be amazed.

Ruth said...

Hi Still, thank you.

Ruth said...

Sharon, no worries, Bishop is used to it. I'm glad you've had a good autumn in Wyoming too, ours has been great.

Ruth said...

Loring! Haha, well I named Bishop for Elizabeth Bishop. I couldn't just call her Elizabeth you know.

I would love to take credit for timing, but I was just snap snap snapping away and was lucky to get a few at good moments. :)

Ruth said...

Anet! She's a queen of cats, let me tell you. Her persona is as elegant in motion as it is still.

Yay, snow! I love the 4 seasons.

i absolutely love this new layout, the colors are gorgeous! the white background just makes the photos pop. and i am so impressed with the collage at the top! i loves. bishop is so adorable.

i am so looking forward to the farm in the winter. it is my favorite.

Ruth said...

Wesrey!! Hello sweetie! I'm glad you like the layout, you designer you. :) Bishop is just the same Bishop, day in day out. I can't wait to have you and Brian here for Christmas. I hope there will be snow, and we can slide on the pond again! With Brian! Yay!

So is the snow sticking? They kept saying we'd get measurable snow today or overnight. Today turned out to be beautiful all day long, not in the 60s and 70s like it had been for weeks, but nice 50s weather with a beautiful late-fall sun. But they're still talking about an inch or two for Monument tonight, though none in town.

Ruth said...

When we went out to the hot tub an hour ago there was 1/2 an inch on the deck! (and still is) It had stopped snowing though, so we won't match you if you get an inch or two.

We had 60s and 70s for a couple weeks too. Crazy for November.

Hi, raining sheep, thank you. It would probably feel pretty good, no?

Not everybody has been playing on the ground with a Bishop!

Never had a cat (a dog, yes), but when I see this one and how you decribe your life with it, I would (almost) like to have one! But, I have no ground like yours to offer!

Ruth said...

Peter, I was never a fan of cats myself. I didn't grow up with any pets, so I'm not used to animals. Bishop reigns here, and we are her grateful guests, for she is a kind and elegant queen. Her name has nothing to do with religious leaders, but is for the poet, Elizabeth Bishop.

Susan said...

As far as I know, Tobey is just an American Showed-up-on-my-doorstep-starving-to-death-domestic-shorthair! I researched Bishop's breed and it sounds fascinating. I had never heard of that one before.

Ruth said...

Hehe, Susan.

Yes, Bishop's breed seems to be a nice one, as one site says: "Pet owners delight with their quiet, reserved and loving ways."

Amen to that!

Peter, not everyone almost fell asleep in the arms of a bishop either LOL!!!

Ruth I loved everything here: your photos of course but also the story and the poem. It snowed at your place? Oh, we're far from that here, thank heavens!

Hi Ruth,
I came here by way of a comment you left on Christina's blog, soul Aperture. Your photos are beautiful, and Bishop looks like such a cutie!

You were interested in making the photos on your blog bigger. If you would like, I could email you with the instructions for how I do it. It's very easy. Email me: mrcarroll(at)optonline(dot)net.

xoxo,
Mary

I think this is Bishop's favorite time of the year. With all of the browns and reds for her to blend in with, she really sits around and watches her world!

Ruth said...

dear Nathalie, only this bishop, believe me!! Oh dear, who would want the other?? :D

Thank you so much. I'm actually fine with the snow, though I doubt it will last long. But you are more moderate in Avignon, and I think maybe you don't get much snow?

Ruth said...

Hi Mary! Welcome to synchronizing.

Thank you very much for your kind comment, and yes Bishop is even better in person.

Well I have emailed you, and now I will await your much anticipated instructions! I saw at Christina's that you found this through google, that's great.

Ruth said...

Donnie, hmm, I hadn't thought of that, you might be right. I also think this temp agrees with her and her thick pelt.

Ruth,I love that kitty all the way from my home in Navarre FL.
On the way home from a doctor's appointment today I saw the most beautiful stretch of wild yellow flowers basking in the bright sunlight. Something about leaving my camera at home seems to bring about beautiful things all around me!

Ruth said...

Oh lucky kitty to be loved by Carl from so far away.

Oh dear, I'm sorry you missed a chance to photograph the wildflowers. I've had that happen too, but I keep the camera with me at all times now. Except when I don't.

Bob Johnson said...

Ruth you've gone and done it again, beautiful story though your photography, and I just love your cat, you can see her personality in her eyes.

Ruth said...

Thank you, Bob, I'm glad you've joined Bishop's fan club. Believe me, she is a worthy feline. I've never seen her be hauty or mean.

You can be enthralled, Ruthie, over it all...the template (I was just telling Donica yesterday that I wish I could make mine larger, so I will e-mail Mary as well, I think!), the leaves, Bishop. That adorable Bishop. How can you NOT be mesmerized by her! I can see why you snapped away!

Ruth said...

Well Boots, you are en route to Zurich, but yes, you do have to tweak each photo in html to get it to enlarge. Maybe Blogger will enrich photo uploads one day, for bigger sizes.

I can't wait to see Switzerland through your lens when you start uploading!

I can so relate to this sweet kitty, I am a cuddler too.
; )

Yes, I see the snow flakes outside my window. You must be near me, maybe. Wink.

Wonderful capture on the golden leaves.

Christina, across the lake. Hi!

Bishop is the very best kitty I've ever met. I am still not a big cat fan, but I am definitely a Bishop fan.
