blue coats, orange hats, and time

It's a quiet Sunday in January. The snow is thawing, it will reach 61°F (16°C) tomorrow. The "children" (Lesley 26, Peter 25 and girlfriend Caitlin 21) playing in the snow on the pond at Christmas is already fading to memory.

Today I've done nothing but read and write all day in the aerie of our guest room.

Tomorrow, the semester starts and I have a feeling the throttle will engage into high gear for the next several months.

Let me just take this moment to breathe, sit like a stone, and age slowly.

I love that last sentence - it sounds so evocative and what a wonderful thing to do.

Oh, Letitia, it was wonderful. I felt guilty now and then, but then the stoneness took over again. Did you know stones don't feel guilty? Oh, and they wear their age well too, in fact they look more polished over time. :)

I long for the snow so I'll spend ten days in the Alpes near Bourg Saint Maurice.

Oh Deslilas, it sounds lovely (even tho I don't know how to ski). Please have fun, don't hurt yourself, and I wish lots of snow your way.

Yes, age gracefully and slowly. I know it gets stressful for you at this time of year. Remember the lessons you've already learned and let go of the rest:D Lots of love.

Swedehart, yesterday I read this quote in "Saturday" by Ian McEwan:

"He's too experienced to be touched by the varieties of distress he encounters -- his obligation is to be useful."

I'm getting there. Ok, this was talking about a neuro-surgeon, but I can still relate to it. :)

This is another great picture, I wonder why I do like those 'oranje mutsen' orange bonnets....., I know they had a lot of fun, Ruth I wish you luck getting in gear again and cherish the moments you had yesterday reading all day!!

Thank you so much, Astrid.

I wonder why I like those hats too. They're my husband's hunting hats, not terribly attractive generally, but they were so cute on the kids. Lesley's is different, one she knitted, but still light orange. :)

The McEwan quote is wonderful, and an apt description of sitting in the Colorado snow this January. There are multiple sources of distress competing for my time, and if I give in to them, the snow becomes an avalanche. I have to rehearse being that stone, and part of that implies the "obligation to be useful." That Paul Baribeau guy from Grand Ledge had a line in a reworked version of "Angel from Montgomery" where he said "because I've been let down by the people that I love, I must not let down the people who love me." No one in my case has let me down, but I do feel the obligation to be useful that McEwen and Baribeau mention. And maybe that means sitting like a stone and breathing slowly.

Loring, excellent. Yes.

BTW, I queued "Juno" which has 85% or some such rating at rotten tomatoes, besides your expert rec.

You KNOW that I love this image, Ruth, since I was there with you that day. It was so stunning to see the hats against the snow!

I can just imagine what it must be like for all of you that have had to go back to work after the holidays, Donica included. Hang in there!

Cute, that was a reach, but you will always find what you are looking for where ever you are looking, so keep looking for it!

Actually, Boots, it hasn't been that bad this week. Let's see how walk-in advising is today and how many students still need to get into classes.

Enjoy retirement! ;)

Thanks, Swedehart.

Ohhh, my girl. Wasn't that soooo fun. I loved it, I loved playing and watching you play. You and your brother, and your brother's girlfriend, play just like little children, and I love it so much.

Yes, my sweet daughter, sit like a stone when you need too.

I love you.

oh, this is very sweet Ruth,
Best literature has come from Scotland and Ireland where people just had to sit and had nothing to do. why not just write ?
i have never experienced winter.
The only snow i have seen is in the Himalayas.
winter is the worst enemy of poverty. We can't afford it.

I need to write more, rauf. I'm lazy most of the time.
