The purple pole beans have pulled down the weather vane. He's buried, I can't even show him to you, the little sawyer. But here is an old picture before the onslaught.
And poor Phoebe is drowning in basil.
What is there to do but make pesto and take some to Sapphos tomorrow night for pasta, place a nasturtium blossom on each plate for garnish, share the beauty and bounty with my lovely poetry writing friends?
Oh, and I'll freeze some too, pesto that is.
There is a satisfying sadness at the end of summer. I'm trying to write a poem about it, but it's difficult to put into words.

WOW! I love all the images, both visual and mental. You make me want to sit still in your garden.
It's there for you, my sweet.
Growth is very powerful Ruth, its a silent force. They grow as much as they can in summer when there is enough sunlight and water. Growth is universal. Plants can rip through thick concrete walls.
i think growth is slow in tropics, where there is sunshine round the year. In colder regions plants too are happy and show off their colours like people love to wear colourful clothes in summer. Things slow down during winter. not much activity, fun, festivities. Spring and summer come back again. You have more respect and value for sunshine than we do in the tropics.
rauf, I hadn't thought about it before, that plants might grow more quickly in colder climates. Another factor would be the longer days, since the closer to the equator you are, the shorter the days are. Our daylight goes until almost 10pm in the peak of summer.
I was glad we moved to the farm in November 2003, when everything was dormant. It gave me a chance to absorb the place in stillness and quiet.
what a fine idea to make pesto for your friends. it's the only thing i could think of! besides maybe selling at the local farmers market. you might need a permit for that.
dad calls the weather vane Chris the Cutter. and he's down! oh no. i hope he gets well soon. :)
i love your gardens. they grow so much every year.
I love the images. Maybe you should write the poem in Phoebe's voice. She certainly sees the changing seasons from a very different perspective.
fantastic one
Les, we might want to wait until the beans die back before rescuing poor Chris (hehe, I don't think I knew about that name, so nice).
I read that I can freeze some pesto, but Diane told me last night it will turn black as soon as it is taken out to thaw. That isn't very appealing!
Drowseymonkey, you're brilliant. That's the best idea. Very creative and sensitive. I wasn't very happy with the poem I took to my group last night, and then I got to "drowsey" to actually workshop it and left early. But this sounds like it could be a way to rescue it. Thank you.
Thank you, KMF.
There is something very poetic about this post as is, Ruth. But I bet from Phoebe's perspective would be brilliant.
I love that I know all about these places and plants in your garden (well, not ALL about it). It makes me feel so much closer to you when you write about them!
Your photos are so bright and clear.
Autumn has come here and today it is raining all day. I have just been out to gather herbs and vegetables for dinner though.
Glad to give my 2 cents Ruth! I agree with Ginnie that your post was poetic, but I can't wait to hear Pheobe's poem.
Ginnie/Boots, let's see what Phoebe has to say. I hope I will be an ok mouthpiece for her. It's a little intimidating now that I think about it. But even if it never gets written down, the story is there, in her voice.
Britt-arnhild, we had some rain yesterday and today too. So you have a garden too. I am going to miss the fresh zucchini every supper.
I'll share it with you Drowsey, if and when it gets written.
That was so "Greencard." Have you seen it? It's a marvelous old movie!
RK, I saw it a long time ago and don't remember what about it this reminds you of.
It's a scene where Bronte is trying to convince the landlords to let her rent the suite with the beautiful garden, and she eloquently describes in detail the tender loving care the plants are needing. Of course they would let you have the garden after reading this blog post!
BCB, Oh, thank you for coming back to tell me. I don't remember that scene. Funny.
