To Ireland July 23-August 4

I'm going to leave you with four Irish sayings.

An Irishman's Philosophy

In life, there are only two things to worry about—
Either you are well or you are sick.
If you are well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will get well or you will die.
If you get well, there is nothing to worry about,
But if you die, there are only two things to worry about—

Either you will go to heaven or hell.
If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about.
And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands
with all your friends you won’t have time to worry!

Murphy's Law

Nothing is as easy as it looks.

Everything takes longer than you expect.

And if anything can go wrong,

It will, at the worst possible moment.

The Irish...

Be they kings, or poets, or farmers,
They're a people of great worth,
They keep company with the angels,
And bring a bit of heaven here to earth.

Irish Men

There are only three kinds of Irish men who can't understand women— young men, old men, and men of middle age.

Ah Pretty girls, is that you ruth in the last picture, can't enlarge it, pretty girl again, lovely pictures of tranquil Ireland. The picture of the road says it all.

What ever they may say, the beat of poetry and literature came from Ireland.

Enjoy yourself Ruth, i don't mean spend all your time in the pubs. if you happen to cross anyold style brewery please take some pictures. Beautiful atmosphere, may not be very fragrant. i have seen local brewery with modern methods and machines. Took pictures for a local liquor baron, who died recently after cheating thousands of people who invested in his bank. Some of my friends lost money too. i said its fine, you wanted to make some quick money and trusted a liquor baron with bad reputation. you may ask why did you take pictures for him ?
i never knew that the brewery belonged to him. More over i had never seen a brewery before. Not a pleasant experience.

rauf, these are girls from the program. The second from the right is Brianna, one of my English majors. Yes, it's me. I don't know why some photos enlarge and others don't. I've tried experimenting in different ways, still won't enlarge.

I sent you some bad pics of two pubs. Some pubs have a very nice social atmosphere. It depends on who is in them. I had a few not great experiences with people who were drunk at 11 in the morning. One was on a bus, and two guys just kept talking to me. I tried to be civil.

In pub culture, most people go to have conversations, not to drink. I mean they drink while they're there, but, unlike our college students in the US, the primary goal is not to get blasted.

I meant to say the last one is me. This is in Killarney, where we road in a horse trap, boated and walked in the wilderness all day. Pure bliss.

Sorry, that fellow coming up from behind me is leading a horse trap. We had to get out and walk some of the way because the road was too steep for the horses to carry 4 passengers. The girls in the earlier shot are in one of these traps.

I knew it was you Ruth, you look like a college girl. Thanks for the pictures. There was a car race game i had, i love car race games. One of the location was Ireland and at one point you can leave the road and drive into a brewery. The location was lovely, very romantic atmosphere {McLaren was my car} Delorean built his car DMC somewhere in northern Ireland.

Older generation used to get drunk, i think younger generation is very smart. You said Ireland is the most prosperous country in EU.
i never knew about that. i thought every body gets drunk in the pubs. Now perhaps that is history. i am happy about that Ruth. Those people have suffered a lot. They still carry the pain. When their dignity is taken away, they'll seek refuge in alcohol. i am really glad things changed dramatically for Ireland largely due to the progressive younger generation. i think Peter's group should tour Ireland. Just for informal concerts. Same atmosphere.
lovely it will be. i have heard a little on their site, The Irish would love them.

hahaha, rauf, I never pictured you playing a car racing game. I am the worst video game player in the history of technology. You would beat me with one hand.

Drinking is still a problem in Ireland. I don't know how accurate my view is, based on reading, that pubs are for socialization primarily. I've still seen plenty of drunk Irish, young and old.

I also wish Peter's band would tour Ireland or Europe. I know he would love to meet Bono and the Edge (U2), his musical influences!

Have a great time, Ruth. Be sure to snap some photos of sheep, if you get the chance. I love to look at sheep in an Irish field.

Ruth said...

Ok, Heather, I'll find you more sheepsies. We're going on the same day long tour of Killarney, where there were lots of sheep last year. Also Tara.

I LOVE the Irish sayings you chose, Ruth. What a history they have with these "blessings." Nothing like Ireland!

I am so excited for you having this experience again...and again. Our thoughts will be with you!!

Thanks, PW. I will probably post photos here while I'm there, as I did last year. I'll have wireless in my dorm room in Dublin.

Ginnie/Boots, well, the Irish love to talk, so I guess that's why they have so many sayings, ha. And they have so many scholars in history. I'll post some things while I'm there if I have time.

Now, I just have a million and one details to see to before we leave. Ayyyyyyyyy!

I remember the road in the car race game was something like this Ruth, it passes through a small village with a church, when you cross the road the Church bell starts ringing. Two Big DONGS

Hello Ruth,
I do hope you enjoy your stay in Ireland. If you get a chance, slip over the Clare Island, it is wonderful.
I came to you from Rauf as you mentioned pottery and having a kiln. I'm sure you can easily get a second hand wheel, but do make sure the wheel head doesn't 'wobble' because then it will be extremely difficult to centre pots and get them to throw up evenly.
While you are in Ireland, have a large Guiness for me.
Lorenzo.
