We are on a Netflix plan in which we pay $15.99 monthly and have unlimited access to 3 movies at a time. Plans range from $4.99 a month for two movies a month one-at-a-time, to 8-at-a-time for 47.99. I’ve never searched a movie I couldn’t find on their list. Now, you know that isn’t true of local video stores.

“Best of Youth” (Italian, “La Meglio gioventù”)
I had queued this long film (2 DVDs) weeks ago, and it’s been sitting unwatched next to the TV a long time. Summer is not the best time to watch lots of movies, if you ask me.
Marco Tullio Giordana directed this 2003 six-hour epic. We finished the first 3-hour DVD last night, and I’m already ready to talk about it. Even though Don slept through a few minutes here and there, he still liked it. (Hey, it was a Friday night after a long week.)
It’s about two brothers in Italy, starting in the 1960s then spanning four decades. I’m not much into epics for their own sake, because I don’t trust that the characters will be developed well enough. It’s a big commitment to watch 6 hours of one movie. But, if you like seeing modern cultural history, good-looking actors in well developed roles,
people conflicted with normal issues of love, friendship and social justice, I highly recommend adding this to your queue, or asking your local video store to get it for you. The story telling and acting are perfectly executed if you ask me. I’m guessing you can get it in other parts of the world too, because it was part of the Singapore Film Festival.I’ve read that the second half of the movie is better than the first, so I’m looking forward to watching another 3 hours tonight.
I haven't tried netflix yet, because I still haven't exhausted the video resources at the public libraries. Since I live in urban sprawl, I have library cards in phoenix, tempe, mesa, chandler, gilbert and ASU.

Another thing I have discovered that I love is non-fiction and poetry.
I have a hard time dedicating myself to fictional movies and books when there are so many things to be learned about the world and so little time do learn it in.
There has got to be a more efficient way to learn it all!
My husband and I discovered NetFlix a couple years ago- we really burnt ourselves out on movies those first three months since every time we turned one back another one came.

Those are valid points, RK, free is very good, can't beat it. I started hearing about films I wanted to see, many of them documentary, that I was not finding in the library or at our local video store. The "7UP" series by Michael Apted was one such series that was happily available on Netflix.
ReplyDeleteI hear you about fiction, and I still tend toward non-fiction reading. But I do enjoy a good novel or fictional movie, probably in the same way I enjoy music, poetry, paintings and artistic/abstract photographs. They get at the truth of the world in ways prose and other more direct modes of documentation can't quite express.
It's all a bit overwhelming though, I agree. I'm grateful for this blog for reflection and discussion.

ReplyDeleteTheresa, yes, it took us a while to figure out a pace/cycle that worked for us too. Mainly we watch one or two movies on the weekend. It's nice if they come on a Monday, they can sit there until Friday, and they're not late.

If you like six-hour Italian epics, I sure hope you've seen the full version of 1900 with DeNiro and Depardieu, Sutherland, Sanda, Lancaster, et al, one of my favorite movies of all time.

If we were home in Atlanta long enough, Ruth, I'm quite sure we'd subscribe to Netflix. It sounds like such a good deal. We have a wide interest in movies, as you know, and can't get enough of them. Today we're gonna see the new Jodie Foster movie, The Brave One. With all our traveling now, it's hard to stay on top of everything, like we once did, but at least in A'dam the movies are in English, which helps!

Yes it is difficult to watch a 6 hour movie, there was an 18 hour German movie 'HEIMAT' A gripping tale of a family through the two wars till modern times, i still remember all the characters. I saw this without break in the 80's, Though i have more free time now, it will be difficult for me to watch even a short film without a break.

ReplyDeleteMaybe if you rent "Best of Youth" you can watch an hour and take a break. It was originally a TV mini-series, so I'm guessing it's broken up into 1-hour chapters you could easily watch at intervals.
That German one is LONG. Haven't seen it. Maybe I will.
