That was a fun little rip and rant, phew! Thank you to those who agreed to participate in my How I Named My Blog invitation.
After a couple days of sobriety, and some chillier November air, I've decided to keep on despising and shunning awards of any kind! If you'd like to tell the story of how you chose your blog name on December 1st, please do! But there will be NO MAJOR AWARD! You can leave a comment in this or the previous post if you'd like to participate, and I'll add you blog to the list. If you already told me you would, I've got you on my list for that day's post. If you want to withdraw now that the pulchritudinous award is just a pretty face on my last post, let me know, teehee.
(It is very hard to resist an exclamation point now, let me tell you. There, I left a big period. That feels a little better.)
I don't like "winners" and "losers" (I was rarely chosen to be on anyone's team) - but I am curious about some of those blog names out there. You can use me as an excuse: "Ruth asked, so I'm telling . . ."
I mean even a name like "Peter's Paris" - how did Swedish Peter come to live in Paris?

What! No award? Well, I guess it's hard to choose but just use your intuition. Or throw a dice. Don't waste a perfectly good award!

Oh, my, yes, of course I'll be there. I happen to be quite sentimentally attached to my blog name and will relish the chance to tell the story on December 1.
ReplyDeleteI'm tickled to death to see you also highlighting something that's more insidious than the proliferation of "awards". I've been fighting the encroachment of exclamation marks, smilies and lols in my own writing and commenting. The impulse to show a little emotion's good, of course. But words can carry emotion, too.
I'm just looking at Wendell Berry's "The Peace of Wild Things". Not an exclamation point in sight. Likewise, a batch of Ephron's essays I read last night didn't carry a single acronym.
And so on....
Best of all, I found "pulchritudinous" here today. (Oops. I almost gave in to an exclamation point! Arrrrgggghhhh)
I keep forgetting to tell you - every time I come here my heart melts at the new photo of Bishop.

ReplyDeleteRe: those exclamation marks, I found in writing the previous post, and then moving into this one, that it was all in what I had gotten used to. If I really let the words just speak, they feel weighty to me. Then I ask myself, but does the reader/recipient get that sense??????
My mother used to quote someone - wish I could remember - who, after someone had said how wonderful marvelous and fantastic something was: "Pray, what word have you saved for the Almighty?"
Yes, Berry's poem. He is the ultimate avoider of cultural extravagances. Doesn't even own a computer!
It makes me happy that Bishop makes your heart melt. She is only 100 times better in person. And that's no exaggeration.
Ruth, you are most welcome to call me "Little Anna". Nobody else calls me that, and I've never actually spared any thought to being called that either, but now that you mention it, it feels like a nice thing to have a place in the world where one is known as "little" something.

V. glad to have met you too - and no, I don't feel shy of you. I tend to feel quite shy about saying something somewhere for the first time, though, as I am easily carried away into loquacious verbosity, and unless I feel safe, this tendency embarrasses me.
So now I've maybe proven that I feel safe here. That'll be another hurrah.

Trudi - you're so good to participate! People are naturally curious about these things, especially with a blog name like Going Out on a Limb. It might seem trivial or mundane to you, because it is in your head, but we have no idea why this blog was going out on a limb for you, or what about your life is going out on a limb, etc. There is an innate human interest in it. Even if it is simply writing in public for the first time. We can all relate to that.
