weekend breakfast

- -

You think you want something light for breakfast, just a snack, such as beads of dark berries in a tablespoon of plain yogurt, or a half cup of Grape Nuts in milk. When you were a girl you doused Grape Nuts in a whole teaspoon of white sugar, like snow on the Jungfrau. As with global warming and other transformations, your Grape Nuts have lost their snow, but you still like a small breakfast.

But on Saturday, you must be ravenous after sleeping in until 6, because the farmer-farmhand-farmer’s-wife-man has a contractual agreement with the Farm Guild that he will cook you a big, hot breakfast, the kind his Aunt Alvaretta cooked when he bunked a week at her farm as a kid, the kind that requires you to be gurneyed from the table on a farm wagon. Friday evening he gathered 18 eggs from his hens, and in the morning as soon as it was light he found 20 fresh morels in the woods and then punched out a dozen biscuits that smelled up the house like the homes of story books. If the man had his way, you'd also have had pork sausages from pigs he raised, minced with herbs from your herb bed. As it was, a quiche full of ham and veggies just out of the oven was firming up on top of the stove.

You're still learning the Farm Manual and haven't gotten to the part yet about whether throwing scraps of quiche to the chickens contributes to cannibalism, but you just can't eat all this food so early. After 3? Oh yes, you can eat this much and more then.

  2. Ruthie, when you get tired of Don, can I have him? I'll adopt him or something. He can cook that delicious-looking quiche for me any old time!

    What a lovely tableau!

  6. Lovely quiche, lovely tableau, but really stopping to acknowledge the Wendell Berry on your sidebar.

Your squirrel, ds's toad, my little Mississippi turtle named Doro - all ambassadors of the world's grace. I loved the music of my trip, but I loved the levee and its creatures, too. They do give rest.

  7. I'd settle for the 'beads of dark berries' atop the yogurt, too, but morels and quiche--too yummy for words. Beautiful, not just for the pictures and the words, but for the offering itself. So lucky you are!

  19. I would love to visit your "B&B" anytime. The breakfast seems like something out of Good Housekeeping magazine. I would love to sit outside and just enjoy the morning. What a dream.

  20. I just stumbled upon your blogs because you are a Ruth like me. Your photography is beautiful, and I am excited to virtually travel to your home, and Paris too! Can't wait to peruse and read more.

  21. J.G., we've talked about that, Don and I. But we don't want to be "on" 24/7. We do love having people visit though.

  22. Ok, Susie, I'll let you know. I think you would like a break from cooking now and then.

  23. Jean, leisurely breakfasts are nice on weekends, after busy workdays.

  24. CottageGirl, I hope you enjoyed it, and did you offer any to the chickens?

  25. Nautankey, that's good, because I need some help eating it all.

  26. Linda, sometimes it is only nature, which is neutral and removes us from the human treadmill, that gives comfort.

  27. DS, many of us like breakfast food any time. It's comfort food, I guess.

  28. Dakota Bear, I do love sitting on the porch all through the warm weather. I reluctantly put the chairs and table away in the winter.

  29. Dutchbaby, be our guest. There were no mushrooms in the quiche, and of course you don't need to eat any from the plate. More for me!

  30. Annie, maybe you eat quiche without meat. I like it any which way - maybe one of my favorites, especially Quiche Lorraine.

  31. Hi, Letty! Getting cold, eh? When it gets cold here then I have more of an appetite, storing up for winter and all that.

  32. Oliag, that was a cooperative chicken, I tell you.

  33. Peter, I imagine you would have tea at around 5, then dinner after 8 or 9.

  34. Lover of Life, of course. I need help eating all this food, and there is plenty of room for another chair.

  35. Sue, sometimes I just look at our place and feel so fortunate. Especially when we can eat the fruits of the inhabitants and the ground.

  36. Hi there, Ruth, welcome to synch and to Paris Deconstructed. I hope you'll enjoy your visits.

  40. Glad you like to eat, Bob. Me too.

  41. Tiffany, and I just saw your chocolate covered strawberries today.

  42. Anna, maybe how food looks is half of what makes us hungry.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hahahaha I haven't eaten breakfast either...so looking back at this post of yours is definitely NOT helping hahaha Have a marvelous day, Ruth!

Oooo and I agree with what you said to Anna - how food looks is definitely a big part of why its so delicious! It attracts us with its textures & colors.

Oh yum! I gotta hit up Dunkin Donuts before class.

  44. Yummie, both the food and the place look fantastic!

    ReplyDelete
  45. Haha, Tiffany, Dunkin Donuts!
